Plot Summary
An old married couple decides to get a cat in order to not be so lonely. The old man goes on a long journey to find millions of cats along the way. Since he can’t decide on just one cat he brings them all home. His wife is distressed as they cannot care for all of the cats. The cats end up fighting with each other and devouring one another leaving only one ugly kitten behind. The husband and wife care for and love it and the kitten becomes a healthy and happy version of herself.

Critical Analysis
This book is different than many of the picture books of today. The book was written in 1928 so the illustrations are black and white and the text is hand-written. There is no color in this book. The grammar in this book is weak and it is too wordy to read aloud to children.

However, the book does create fun imagery through the use of words, and the illustrations support by using art techniques that make the reader feel part of the scenes.

Using math concepts to show numbers and what a million truly is can be discussed with older children. Finally teaching children to compare and contrast healthy with unhealthy characteristics in cats and humans.
